Mission and objectives

GMNI is a youth movement with a nationalist ideology. Their ideology is called marhaen or marhaenism, which is linked to Soekarno’s thought and movement base. GMNI focuses on social, political, and educational issues.

Main activities with youth

GMNI has discussions, seminars, cadre training, and education by organising socialisation, youth movements (politics, education and social), mobilising the masses, and hearings with local governments. The purpose of training is to improve skills or capacity building. GMNI is an organisation that targets young people, especially students. Each member must carry out a certain level of training. The training is Pekan Penerimaan Anggota Baru (PPAB), Kaderisasi Tingkat Dasar (KTD), Kaderisasi Tingkat Menengah (KTM), until Kaderisasi Tingkat Pelopor (KTP). GMNI management has a level in each structure, from the commissariat (university) to Dewan Pimpinan Pusat (DPP).

Their story

GMNI was established in 1953 as an agglomeration of three student organisations. The organisation were the Gerakan Mahasiswa Marhenis (Yogyakarta), Gerakan Mahasiswa Merdeka (Surabaya), and Gerakan Mahasiswa Demokrat Indonesia (Jakarta). GMNI has many branches in Indonesia and is one of Indonesia’s largest external student organisations.

Constituency

Members are university students aged 18 to 30 years old.

Current management

As an external student organisation, GMNI has guidelines for running the organisation, which are called the AD/ART and used as a reference in the organisation, at the commissariat (university), and at national management levels. The decision of the general chairman is important as a determinant of the direction of the movement and the organisation’s policies following the AD/ART.
