Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI) / Islamic Students’ Association

Mission and objectives

HMI is an Islamic organisation with an ideology called Nilai Dasar Perjuangan (NDP). This organisation focuses on the youth movement.

Main activities with youth

HMI has activities such as internal cadre training, seminars, youth movements (politics, education and social), mobilising the masses, and discussions and hearings with local governments. The purpose of training is to improve skills or capacity building. Members are recruited through LK1 to LK3 training forums. LK is cadre training.

Their story

Lafran Pane and fellow scholars founded HMI as a forum for Islamic-based youth and student movements in Indonesia. HMI has more than 156 branches throughout Indonesia, the Solo Branch being one of Java’s major branches.

Constituency

Members are university students aged 18 to 30 years old.

Current management

HMI has binding rules, namely AD/ART, and a regular structure from the commissariat (university) level, commissariat coordinator, branches, and representatives in the regions and the HMI national board.
