Mission and objectives

  1. Offering a 10-month program to equip Syrian refugees and vulnerable Lebanese youth (aged 18-22) with the skills and knowledge to pursue self-defined educational and career paths in Lebanon or abroad.
  2. Providing academic readiness, university guidance, and scholarship opportunities through targeted support programs.
  3. Teaching transferable skills such as communication, digital literacy, and leadership to enhance education, employment, and community engagement.
  4. Creating inclusive learning communities that foster adaptability, solidarity, and cohesion.
  5. Offering courses in English, Digital Skills, Math, Science, and Humanities to prepare students for university entrance exams and studies.
  6. Building partnerships with organizations to expand access to scholarships and further educational support.

Main activities with youth

  1. Foundational courses in English for Academic Purposes, Digital Skills, Remedial Maths, Science, and Humanities/Social Science.
  2. Programs for university entrance exams and to ensure success in higher education.
  3. Guidance for navigating university and scholarship applications through weekly “Student Support Days.”
  4. Skill development program communication, digital literacy, and leadership.
  5. Inclusive learning communities: Students are engaged in co-creating empowering and inclusive environments that enhance adaptive skills and foster solidarity and cohesiveness among participants.  

Their story

The American University of Beirut (AUB) launched the Strengthening Tertiary Educational Pipelines (STEP) program to address the low enrollment of refugees in higher education, which stands at only 3% globally. This initiative aims to increase access to tertiary education for refugees and vulnerable youth in Lebanon, aged 18-22, while improving their prospects for employment.
