Their story
When the founders of the World Resources Institute (WRI) created the organization in 1982, they were addressing a critical need. The environmental problems that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s—deforestation, desertification, and climate change—were not adequately addressed. These complex global problems posed unprecedented policy and political challenges. WRI’s founders saw a need for an organization that could independently address the concerns of people and nature. With that goal in mind, WRI’s founders eschewed the then-popular activist model and instead focused on a science-based, research-based organization. The institute would conduct research and policy analysis on global environmental and resource issues and their relationship to societal needs and development. Such research and analysis needed to be grounded in science and practice to make real changes on the ground while also gaining the respect of the scientific community and the attention of key decision-makers in the public and private sectors. Equally important, the institute had to be able to translate its analysis and recommendations into action.
Constituency
Achieve change by directly engaging with various stakeholders while relying on big ideas and analysis to enable better decision-making processes at different governance levels. There are no specific age groups.
Current management
WRI brings together 1,400 experts and other staff working in seven programs: food, forests, water, energy, cities, climate and the ocean and four centres of excellence for business, economics, finance and equity. Their staff and researchers work globally to produce data-based solutions that generate real change on the ground.
